What to Expect
You may be asked to change into a gown to ensure clothing does not interfere with image quality.
At Sydney Imaging Specialists, we use advanced CT technology and carefully optimised protocols to ensure the lowest radiation dose reasonably achievable. CT scans involve a small amount of radiation, so if you are pregnant or think you may be, please discuss this with your referring doctor before your appointment.
Some CT examinations require an injection of iodinated contrast to enhance the visibility of blood vessels and organs. If contrast is required, you may be asked to fast for a short period, typically 2–4 hours. Our team will provide clear instructions when you book. While contrast is considered very safe, additional precautions are taken for patients with kidney conditions, diabetes, or known allergies. Comprehensive safety checks are completed beforehand to minimise any risk.
In certain abdominal studies, you may also be asked to drink an oral contrast solution, which may require fasting.
During your scan, you will lie comfortably on the CT table as the scanner moves gently around you. The scan is quick and painless. To ensure the best image quality, you will need to remain still and may be asked to hold your breath briefly. Our team will guide you clearly throughout the process.
All contrast examinations at Sydney Imaging Specialists are conducted under the supervision of our radiologists, with medical support available to ensure your safety and comfort at all times.
